If you've opened your World App wallet recently, you may have noticed something different.
The old Vault is being replaced by Earn.
I noticed the change myself when I opened my wallet and was greeted with a message:
“Vault is being replaced by Earn.”
Naturally, I wanted to know what that actually means.
Is this just a name change?
No.
And the more interesting part is that Earn potentially gives World users access to a much bigger earning opportunity than the old Vault.
From Vault to Earn
The old Worldcoin Vault was relatively straightforward.
You could move your WLD from your Spending balance into the Vault and earn rewards on it.
World's documentation says the Vault rewards were provided through decentralized smart contracts, with limits on how much WLD could earn rewards.
The example given by World was 500 WLD. Rewards accrued continuously and were distributed daily, although they were received when you withdrew your WLD from the Vault.
And many World users will remember the headline number:
10% APY.
That made the Vault an interesting option for anyone who wasn't planning to immediately sell their WLD.
Instead of simply sitting there, your WLD could theoretically produce more WLD.
But now World is moving to something considerably more sophisticated.
Enter Earn
Earn is not simply the Vault renamed.
According to World, Earn allows users to deposit supported assets into on-chain lending protocols and track the rewards generated by those deposits directly inside World App. WLD is one of the supported assets, alongside assets such as USDC, wETH and wBTC.
And this is where things get interesting.
World says Earn uses Morpho, a decentralized lending protocol, to find competitive on-chain lending opportunities.
In other words, World App is increasingly becoming a front door to DeFi.
You don't necessarily need to go hunting through different protocols, connect a separate wallet and figure out the mechanics yourself.
You can do it through World App.
That's a pretty significant evolution from the old Vault.
And there's a bigger limit
Here's the part that immediately caught my attention.
The old Vault had a rewards limit of 500 WLD in the example provided by World.
The new Earn program's human-boosted rewards apply to the first 1,000 WLD deposited into Earn.
So the amount of WLD that can benefit from the boosted rewards has effectively doubled.
If you had 500 WLD sitting in the old Vault, the new system potentially gives you considerably more room to earn boosted rewards.
And that is particularly interesting because WLD isn't exactly the kind of cryptocurrency that everyone is desperate to sell immediately.
For long-term World believers, earning additional WLD while holding WLD is an attractive proposition.
But don't call it “11% guaranteed”
This is where I think it's important to read the small print.
You may see an APY around the 11% mark in your World App, but the rate isn't fixed.
World explicitly says Earn's reward rates are variable and can go up or down.
The APY depends on factors including the underlying protocol rates, the amount of assets you're holding and promotional rewards. World App displays the current APY before you deposit.
What happens to my old Vault?
The screenshots from my own World App make the transition pretty clear.
My wallet first showed the old Vault structure.
Then World presented me with:
“Upgrade to the new Earn program.”
The message says:
“Vault is being replaced by Earn, giving you more than ever before.”
The migration is presented directly inside the World App rather than requiring users to figure out some complicated DeFi transaction themselves.
That is probably the most important part of this whole development.
Is this actually better?
For World users who simply want to hold WLD?
Potentially, yes.
The headline advantages are pretty compelling:
Old Vault
- WLD earning mechanism
- Around 10% APY was previously advertised
- Example rewards limit of 500 WLD
- Simple World App experience
New Earn
- On-chain lending infrastructure
- Powered through Morpho
- WLD supported
- Human-boosted rewards on the first 1,000 WLD
- Variable APY
- More assets supported
- Rewards tracked directly inside World App
But there's an important trade-off.
This isn't a bank savings account.
Your WLD is being put to work through DeFi infrastructure.
World itself warns about smart-contract and market risks associated with on-chain activity.
So the higher potential return comes with a different type of risk.
And, of course, there's the elephant in the room:
WLD itself can go up or down in value.
An 11% APY doesn't help much if WLD falls 50%.
Likewise, if WLD eventually appreciates dramatically, earning additional WLD along the way could become considerably more interesting.
The bigger picture
This is actually what interests me most about the change.
World started out with a fairly simple proposition:
Prove you're human → receive WLD → use WLD.
But the ecosystem is becoming much more complicated.
World App is increasingly becoming a wallet, payment platform, identity system and gateway into DeFi.
And Earn fits neatly into that evolution.
Instead of simply holding WLD, users can potentially put their WLD to work without leaving the World ecosystem.
For a project that is ultimately trying to build a global financial network for humans in the age of AI, that's a pretty logical direction.
The irony is that the thing that initially attracted many people to World — free WLD — may eventually become less important than what you can actually do with the WLD once you have it.
And Earn is one example of World trying to answer that question.
One final warning
If you're seeing the Earn upgrade in your World App, check the actual APY displayed to you before depositing.
Don't rely on screenshots, old articles or somebody on X claiming that World is “paying 11%.”
The rate is variable.
And availability can also depend on your country and account.
As always with crypto: understand what you're depositing into before you deposit it.
For me, though, the transition from Vault to Earn is another small indication that World is becoming considerably more than an app for collecting WLD.
The World economy is slowly starting to look like an actual economy.
And that's worth watching.
